Amid all the mumble-jumble surrounding Marvel’s newest controversial actor and antagonist extraordinaire Jonathan Majors, fans of the biggest franchise in the world are already recasting Kang, and the worst possible choice for the character might have just arisen in the depths of Twitter.
On March 25, the actor responsible for bringing one of Marvel’s bone-chilling villains to our screens was arrested for equally frightening reasons, after facing alleged assault charges by an ex-girlfriend. As Majors’ lawyer awaits for the charges to drop, leaving the rest of the world attentively anticipating the aftermath of the situation, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have already taken the role of fan-casting the next Kang. Meant to be taken as a joke to lighten up an undoubtedly serious situation, an especially eye-catching suggestion made everyone reconsider the recasting of Kang altogether.
Portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder (2008), the character mentioned above is a part of the comedy film directed by Ben Stiller, and albeit heavily praised for its quality, the movie — and the character — have one very evident flaw in its script: the use of blackface. The tweet, obviously meant as a joke, certainly received plenty of hilarious responses, with some fans even suggesting Terrence Howard return to Marvel after his entire behind-the-scenes debacle.
While Walt Disney Studios has yet to come forward with a decision regarding Majors’ role in the franchise, in light of the recent news that came up during the weekend, it is unlikely that a recast would be done so soon. But, hey, at least humor is still alive among Marvel fans, even if there seems to be an oddly specific pattern amid celebrities portraying superheroes.
