If recent reports have it right, then Matt Reeves’ The Batman is scheduled to go into production by the end of the year, giving Warner Bros. just a few more months to assemble Robert Pattinson’s co-stars. So far, the Twilight actor remains the only performer confirmed for the project, but in recent weeks, the internet has offered an overwhelming array of rumors and suggestions for who else could or should be in the running for a role.
In particular, it’s believed that The Batman will hold at least six major villain slots, including such cherished characters as Catwoman and the Riddler. Though Warner is keeping quiet over who exactly will be in this Rogues Gallery, one key antagonist that we’ve known for a while to feature in the script is Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, who last made the jump to live-action cinema with 1992’s Batman Returns. And while it doesn’t sound like the character has been cast just yet, a source close to We Got This Covered has relayed word of one actor who’s currently being eyed for the part.
The potential star in question is none other than Toby Jones, who’s certainly no stranger to major franchise fare. For one thing, you may recall Jones’ turn as Dobby in the Harry Potter films, and more recently, the actor has lent his talents to the MCU in the role of Dr. Arnim Zola for the first two Captain America movies. On top of that, the performer played Claudius Templesmith in the Hunger Games series, and also made an appearance in last year’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
If what we’re hearing is true, then Jones is still one of several actors on Warner’s wish list, suggesting that it could be a while before we get any confirmation on the casting. But whoever the next Penguin will be, we can see them in action when The Batman hits theaters on June 25th, 2021.
