Last week we told you that Matthew McConaughey was being considered for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film Interstellar. Now, we have confirmation that the actor will indeed lead the sci-fi epic. He’ll play a character named Cooper but other than that we don’t have anymore details on the role. And, considering this is a Nolan film, it will likely stay that way for a while.
In terms of story, we’ve heard that the film “depicts a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest borders of our scientific understanding.” Described as both “complex and multi-layered,” the script (written by Nolan’s brother Jonathan), is based on theories developed by Caltech physicist Kip Thorne.
Though many may shake their head at Matthew McConaughey leading a Christopher Nolan film, I’m thrilled to see the actor stepping into a movie like this. In recent years he’s really transformed himself. With excellent performances in films like Killer Joe, The Lincoln Lawyer and Magic Mike, he’s starting to make people sit up and take notice of his acting talents, whereas in the past he used to be nothing more than just a pretty face.
Future projects like Mud (which arrives this month) and Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street will likely further prove that McConaughey should be taken seriously as an actor.
After all, Christopher Nolan is pretty good when it comes to casting, so if he sees something in the actor then we should have full faith that McConaughey will be able to lead a sci-fi epic like Interstellar.
Interstellar hits regular theaters and IMAX on November 7th, 2014. It’s going to be a mighty long wait for what will undoubtedly be another masterpiece from Nolan and I can only hope that we hear more on it soon. In the meantime though, head to the comments and let us know what you think Nolan has cooked up for his next film.
