You wait weeks – if not months – for a Bat-shaped scrap of information to come along and all of a sudden, three arrive at once.
Amid news that Matt Reeves is honing in on his script for The Batman (spoilers: it won’t be influenced by “Year One” after all) and Ben Affleck is still in contention to star, /Film has relayed another tidbit from Reeves himself, who once again insists that his upcoming DC standalone pic takes place within the DCEU. Or should that be Worlds of DC?
It’s by no means the first time that Matt Reeves has addressed the issue, but in light of Warner Bros. shifting its focus to character-driven solo pics – think of the Joaquin Phoenix-led Joker movie – perhaps now’s the time for some clarification from the man behind the wheel.
There are ways in which all of this connects to DC, to the DC universe as well. We’re one piece of many pieces, so I don’t want to comment on that except to say that I’m focused very specifically on this aspect of the DC world.
Suffice it to say, Reeves isn’t ready to reveal everything when it comes to the Dark Knight’s next solo adventure, but he did make one thing clear: his approach to The Batman was in no way altered by Warner’s change of tact.
He continued:
From the beginning, what I had always spoken about with Warner Brothers and what I was excited about was being in the Batuniverse and really doing something within that sphere. That was always what it was going to be so in that way it hasn’t changed a lot since I first met with them. It’s very much the same thrust if that makes sense. A lot of things have happened since then but the movie, and why I’m excited about it, is it continues to be the same inspirations and excitement of what we talked about in the beginning.
If The Batman‘s script is turned in within the next fortnight, then Matt Reeves and his team may well be ready to begin production early next year, when the DC Extended Universe will be ready to welcome Shazam! into its midst. As always, watch this space for more.
