As a standalone film, Avengers: Endgame is an exhilarating rollercoaster of superhero action with a few glaring plot holes to boot. But as the final chapter in this current MCU era, it was damn near perfect.
So perfect that it warrants one or two Oscar nominations? That’s the view held by Disney and Marvel Studios, who are said to be plotting a major push for Endgame ahead of the 2019-2020 awards circuit. And we know what you’re thinking; superhero films have a poor track record when it comes to wooing Academy voters. But following last year’s Best Picture nomination for Black Panther, there’s a precedent for the Powers That Be to recognize what is undoubtedly the MCU’s crowning achievement – a historic feat in and of itself, given 2018 brought us Infinity War and its own super-sized ensemble.
Word of Disney’s Oscar push comes to us by way of Fandango’s Erik Davis, who revealed via Twitter that Academy members recently laid eyes on a screening of Avengers: Endgame.
There was a big screening of #AvengersEndgame for Academy members this week. Early sign of a major Oscars push? Is Endgame Best Picture material?
I think it is. pic.twitter.com/HqZtOj8is7— Erik Davis (@ErikDavis) May 2, 2019
Is it enough to woo voters? Time will tell. Davis is certainly confident in Endgame‘s Best Picture credentials, though we imagine Joe and Anthony Russo’s blockbuster won’t seem quite as impressive to the layman, whereas long-time MCU fans are able to appreciate the many callbacks and crowd-pleasing moments.
At $1.48 billion and climbing, Avengers: Endgame has well and truly made its mark on the global box office. And things are just getting started. With a potentially record-breaking second weekend on the horizon, there’s every chance Marvel’s megaton could surpass $2 billion in record time, as it sets its sights on the current king: Avatar, which is still somehow – almost inexplicably – the highest grossing film of all time at $2.78 billion.
