Almost every major hero in the MCU got their moment to shine in Avengers: Endgame, but aside from maybe Captain America, the main player in the Russo Brothers’ epic was without a doubt Iron Man. And with Robert Downey Jr. now having hung up the suit for good, many fans feel that it’s time for him to get some Academy Awards recognition for bringing Tony Stark to life so perfectly.
Of course, the Oscars don’t have the best relationship with comic book movies. Even Black Panther – which earned itself seven nominations, including Best Picture – didn’t have any of its cast recognized at the Academy Awards. With that in mind, a nod for Downey Jr. feels like wishful thinking, but that hasn’t stopped fans from now putting forth another star from Endgame as someone who deserves some Oscar recognition for their work.
Over on Reddit, user Eryk0201 made a post about Jeremy Renner’s performance in the film, stating that the actor deserves an Academy Award for his role. And with over 8000 upvotes, it’s clear that a lot of Marvel fans agree, even if this seems more unlikely than Downey Jr. receiving a statue.
Don’t get us wrong, Renner did terrific work in Avengers: Endgame, and he’s given a lot of really great performances across his career, but as we said above, Oscars tend to ignore comic book movies and if they do end up recognizing the Infinity War sequel for any acting awards, it’s very likely that it’ll be Robert Downey Jr. who gets the nod. And to be honest, he probably deserves it most.
In any case, Oscars or no Oscars, Avengers: Endgame has become a tremendous success, pleasing both fans and critics and scoring just about every box office record it could. As such, we don’t imagine Marvel will be too bothered if they find themselves snubbed by the Academy again.
