To say that Avengers: Infinity War heralds a defining moment for the Marvel Cinematic Universe may read as something of a colossal understatement. After all, this is an event movie that, in many ways, signals the culmination of a vision birthed alongside Jon Favreau’s Iron Man almost ten years ago, and since Robert Downey Jr. uttered the phrase, “the truth is…I am Iron Man,” in front of the paparazzi, the MCU has evolved into one of Hollywood’s most successful franchises.
It’s a universe that’ll expand to accommodate Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 next week – those in the UK can look forward to James Gunn’s space opera opening tomorrow, April 28th – and though there are still a further three movies cramming up the pipeline before Joe and Anthony Russo spark Marvel’s Infinity War, the third Avengers film is fuelling debate across the four corners of the Internet thanks to the ongoing GotG Vol. 2 press tour.
The latest development comes to us by way of Fandango, after the outlet caught up with Marvel boss Kevin Feige to discuss Star-Lord’s next adventure. It didn’t take long before the conversation veered toward Avengers: Infinity War, though, at which point Feige – one of the nominal creative players of the MCU, given he holds a producing credit on each and every film – claimed that Joe and Anthony Russo’s all-star event pic will take comic book movies to a whole new level.
It’s more exciting than people are aware of right now, with what’s happening [on Infinity War]. We’re doing things you’ve never seen before with films based on comics.
This is by no means the first time that Infinity War has been placed in a league of its own, either, after co-director Joe Russo claimed the upcoming sequel will usher in an “event like no one has ever seen on film before.”
Avengers: Infinity War shoots for theaters on May 4th, 2018. It’ll be followed by a fourth, as-yet-untitled Avengers movie that’s definitely not called Infinity Gauntlet – if James Gunn is to be believed, of course.
