Despite positive reviews and a decent box office take for 2010’s Kick-Ass, the once-burgeoning film franchise appears to be dead in the water following the 2013 sequel, which was met with far less praise and diminished box office returns. Original film director Matthew Vaughn has been keen on more follow-ups and even a prequel film following Chloe Grace-Moretz’s Hit-Girl and Nicolas Cage’s Big Daddy, but more tales about the hyper-violent street-level superheroes have hardly seemed likely, especially with film stars Grace-Moretz and Aaron Taylor-Johnson growing older and moving on to other film properties.
Still, Vaughn hasn’t quite let the possibility of Kick-Ass 3 or Hit-Girl go and recently brought them up in an interview with Yahoo UK:
We would like to dip our toe back into it… We’re working on an idea for a prequel of how did Hit Girl and Big Daddy become Hit Girl and Big Daddy. It’s quite a fun idea we’ve come up with. If we make that, hopefully that will be the sorbet for the people that didn’t like ‘Kick-Ass 2’ and then we can go off and make ‘Kick-Ass 3.’ I think we’ve got to do this prequel to regain the love that we had with ‘Kick-Ass.’
As great as that sounds (especially if it means having the chance to wash our hands of Kick-Ass 2), series creator Mark Millar seems less optimistic about the possibility. Speaking with /Film, he said:
There’s really nothing happening here in any official way. Matthew is talking about an idea we had for Hit-Girl but it’s just been a few informal chats and we haven’t discussed Kick-Ass 3 at all. We’re getting Superior together at the moment and Matthew is putting some Kingsman sequel ideas together but Hit-Girl and Kick-Ass are not on our radar I’m afraid.
Of course, there’s always the chance that Kick-Ass 3 or Hit-Girl could happen, but at the moment the only way to follow these characters is through their respective comic book series.
