During Star Wars Celebration Europe this week, Mark Hamill fielded questions from eager fans who were curious to learn more about his role in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VIII. Obviously, he couldn’t say a whole lot, but he did agree with the fact that the vast amount of secrecy surrounding the film is “annoying.”
“It can be annoying and intrusive,” he admitted. “You get the call sheets and there are no names – only numbers! I really loved number eleven’s work on their previous film. They’re not doing it to annoy you though, they just want the surprise to be in the movie theater, not the internet. It’s for your viewing pleasure that we do this.”
It’s not only the fans that have a tough time dealing with the secrecy, either, as Hamill says that it makes his job tough as well.
“It can get out of control with the pages that get shredded,” he added. “I need a script you can write on and take home and read! So they let me have a scene I can keep.”
Among other things, he also mentioned that director Rian Johnson is a “genius” and that the film will have a ton of quotable dialogue. Not only that, but he suspects that a number of the lines will end up on future merchandise.
Unfortunately, the actor couldn’t divulge much more on Episode VIII aside from the above, and with Rogue One seemingly the current focus of the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t expect to hear more about Johnson’s entry into the franchise for a while.
Still, Hamill will no doubt have a significant role in Star Wars: Episode VIII and given how The Force Awakens ended, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for Luke Skywalker once the film hits theatres.
