Margot Robbie is taking her role as head Barbie very seriously. The producer/star of Greta Gerwig’s forthcoming Barbie has been going all out with her doll-inspired fashion while promoting the film, gleefully celebrating Barbie’s hyper-femininity and love of bold colors. Check out a slew of memorable fashion moments below:
Now, Robbie has topped herself by serving two looks in one with her recreation of the 1985 Day-to-Night Barbie at a recent premiere in Seoul:
Marvel at the shimmering midi dress. Freak out over the white fedora. Be unable to handle the chunky cell phone. This side-by-side shot with the original dolls is enough to make even Barbie haters concede that Robbie nailed it:
Compared with the actual Day-to-Night Barbies, Robbie gets 10s across the board for not only recreating outfits that are very “of their time,” but also for making them seem timeless now that they’re life-sized and in motion.
For those who just want to see the freakin’ movie already, we’re a mere three weeks out from opening night on July 21. Box office projections suggest Barbie will positively walk all over Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, in heels no less. Barbie is currently tracking for a $70-80 million haul over the first weekend, while Oppenheimer is eying a $40 million start.
This isn’t exactly surprising, since Barbie looks fun and Oppenheimer looks horrifying (and is R-rated to boot). But some industry insiders think Barbie could go well beyond that figure.
No one can say Robbie isn’t doing her part to push the hype train into high gear. It’s rare to see an actor do so much to celebrate an iconic role that isn’t a superhero these days, so if we can get a few more Barbie looks before opening night, the long wait until July 21 will be worth it.
