Coming off her Academy Award-nominated performance in I, Tonya, Margot Robbie has officially joined the cast of Quentin Tarantino’s next film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The Australian actress will play Sharon Tate, the murdered, pregnant wife of director Roman Polanski. Robbie confirmed her involvement in the project during a recent interview while promoting the May 11th release, Terminal.
The Sony Pictures film already boasts a stellar cast, including Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio and six-time Academy Award nominee Brad Pitt. Set in 1969, the film will have The Wolf of Wall Street star playing TV western actor Rick Dalton, and Pitt as Cliff Booth, his stunt double.
Tarantino filled out the rest of the cast for his ninth feature just yesterday, adding long-serving collaborators Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, Death Proof), Tim Roth (Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs) and Michael Madsen (Kill Bill series). Also joining the ensemble is Oscar nominee Burt Reynolds.
Speaking to IndieWire in a recent interview, Robbie revealed how she’s a “huge Tarantino fan” and is anticipating the on-set experience.
“Tarantino is one of my bucket-list directors. As long as I can remember, I’ve been a huge Tarantino fan.”
“Beyond anything, I’ve just always wanted to see him work. And I want to see how he runs a set, and how he directs people, and what the vibe is onset, and what’s in the script, and then what happens on the day. I’m just fascinated by all of it, fascinated. So it’s going to be a crazy experience to witness it firsthand. It’s something I’ve always dreamed of doing.”
Expected to begin production later this year, Robbie admits that she’s more than happy with a supporting role, explaining:
“I always want to play supporting roles. I love not having the responsibility of a film rest on my shoulders. It’s terrifying. Like ‘Mary Queen of Scots,’ I’m like, ‘That’s Mary, Queen of Scots, and I get to play [Queen Elizabeth I],’ you know? That’s perfect for me. I get to work with an actress I adore, Saoirse [Ronan]. It’s scary when the title of the film is your character’s name.”
Following the downfall of longtime producer Harvey Weinstein, Tarantino announced late last year that he would be taking his newest film to Sony Pictures, where it’ll see a release on August 9, 2019. With Robbie now firmly on board, it seems that most of the casting for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is complete, but should anyone else join, we’ll be sure to let you know.
