David S. Goyer and Spyglass are set to breathe new life into ol’ Pinhead, as Deadline reports that The Dark Knight scribe will spearhead a new incarnation of Hellraiser.
It’s been pitched as a “reimagination” of the 1987 classic of the same name, and it even appears to have the blessing of Clive Barker, given he’s a close friend to Gary Barber, the chairman and chief executive officer of Spyglass. He’s tapped Goyer to write and produce this 21st-century version of Hellraiser, and considers him to be the “perfect storyteller” to continue Pinhead’s story for a new generation.
Barber’s official statement reads as so:
Clive and I go back more than 30 years together. For generations, his brilliantly twisted and imaginative Hellraiser haunted the minds of moviegoers with its searing imagery of Pinhead. David is the perfect storyteller to continue Clive’s vision for a new theatrical version of Hellraiser.
Further details, including a release window and a potential production start date, weren’t disclosed at this early, early stage. Nevertheless, recruiting a writer of Goyer’s caliber is exciting in and of itself, given his previous credits range from The Dark Knight trilogy to Marvel’s Blade. In short, he’s clearly well versed in stylized action scenes, and considers this Hellraiser gig to be a ‘nightmare’ come true.
I’ve been a fan of Clive’s work since the original Books of Blood paperbacks and The Hellbound Heart novella. Having the chance to reimagine Pinhead and the Cenobites for a new audience is a nightmare-come-true. Gary is a true fan as well and we’re committed to making something dark and visceral.
So, there you have it: a new iteration of the infamous Pinhead is officially on the cards, and it’s coming to us by way of David S. Goyer. Whether Hellraiser fans will take to his vision will be told in time, but for now, we can take solace in the fact that Goyer is gunning to create a “dark and visceral” reimagining of Pinhead and those creepy Cenobites.
