At long last, Loki’s true allegiance in Avengers: Infinity War has finally been revealed. Speaking at Comic Con Experience 2017 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that the God of Mischief will indeed be one of Thanos’ allies in the film, just as we’d all suspected.
As fans will know, the debate initially stemmed from the events of Thor: Ragnarok. In the recent threequel, Loki looked to have found his inner good guy as he stood by his brother throughout the fight against Hela. In a touching moment of brotherly bonding, he even remained by the new king of Asgard’s side once the threat had been dealt with.
However, there was one hint that Loki still had a hidden agenda throughout the movie. When he was in Odin’s vault to awaken Surtur, he was shown to notice the Tesseract, on display and unguarded. Seeing as he was desperate to get his hands on it back in The Avengers, the trickster god naturally looked more than a little tempted to pinch it.
This, coupled with a scene in the recent Infinity War trailer – where Loki is shown to offer the Tesseract AKA the Space Infinity Stone to someone else, someone a lot taller – all but confirmed that the God of Mischief would go back to his evil ways. Now, though, we know for sure that his apparent switch to the good side in Ragnarok was just another ploy and he’s still as bad to the bone as ever.
After 10 years and 17 films’ worth of build-up – Black Panther notwithstanding – Avengers: Infinity War is finally prepped and ready to deliver a huge climax on May 3rd, 2018. Select international countries, including the United Kingdom, will welcome Marvel’s sequel a little early, too, which only highlights the continuing importance of the overseas box office.
