With the recent success of action films targeted at an older demographic, Lionsgate has decided to get in on the fun. The studio has finally scheduled a release date for its next film, which will follow in the footsteps of Summit Entertainment’s 2010 hit, Red.
Starring Academy Award winners Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, and Alan Arkin, Stand Up Guys is currently in production and tells the story of three “retired gangsters who reunite for one epic night.”
If numbers from The Expendables 2, which features action heroes that might be considered “past their prime,” are any indication of box office trends, then I have no doubt that Stand Up Guys will be a success.
Although it might miss out on the attention from younger generations, the actors involved have enough clout to nab the interest of a wide array of moviegoers nonetheless.
With Red 2 on its way from virtually the same studio, now that Summit and Lionsgate are a pair, it will be interesting to see how Stand Up Guys fares with a little in-house competition.
Stand Up Guys is scheduled for limited release on January 11, 2013. The project is being produced by Lakeshore Entertainment under Tom Rosenberg, Sidney Kimmel, Jim Tauber and Gary Lucchesi.
Have you had enough aging action heroes on the big screen for one lifetime? Or is this an untapped demographic finally having its heyday?
