After a ballsy, three-section poster that revealed the trio of villains with whom everybody’s favorite neighborhood Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) will be tangling in next summer’s hotly-anticipated The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony is taking a step back with a simple, foreboding poster that puts the focus squarely back on Electro (Jamie Foxx).
Spider-Man looks out over a stormy, electrified New York City skyline, ready to leap into battle. It’s a teaser image, to be sure, but one that emphasizes the difficulty of the battle that the web-slinger is about to face. Electro is a villain capable of controlling various forms of electricity, which makes him almost indestructible (as well as a highly efficient bug-zapper). Meanwhile, Spider-Man is only equipped with his agility, web-shooters and intellect.

Sony has really been playing up the high stakes of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but does “His Greatest Battle Begins” suggest that the superhero sequel might leave off on a major cliffhanger?
Fans of the series have long been nervous about the romance between Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), as the romance ended tragically in the comics, with [COMIC-BOOK SPOILER] Stacy perishing during a battle between Spider-Man and The Green Goblin on the George Washington Bridge [END SPOILER]. With Dane DeHaan appearing as some version of the Goblin in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the pieces appear to be falling into place for Stacy to make a traumatic exit.
Director Marc Webb chose to cut out Shailene Woodley’s take on love interest Mary Jane Watson, but the fact that scenes involving the iconic redhead were part of the script originally add further weight to the idea that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 may opt for a truly game-changing ending.
The powerful trio of villains – Electro, The Green Goblin and The Rhino (Paul Giamatti) – might also prove too much for Spider-Man to dispatch in one film, so perhaps “His Greatest Battle Begins” is also hinting that one or two of the antagonists may still be at large at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
