Turns out there may be a very good reason why Justice League has welcomed the return of Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta) and Robin Wright (General Antiope) in recent weeks, as leaked set photos from Zack Snyder/Joss Whedon’s ensemble movie point to the addition of Wonder Woman flashback scenes.
First unearthed by Batman Notes – and relayed to us via Batman-News – the snaps were taken at the Cardington Sheds in Bedfordshire, which is playing host to the ongoing Justice League reshoots. Those extra scenes and pick-ups are being overseen by Joss Whedon (Batgirl), who was drafted in to replace Zack Snyder at the helm after the latter stepped down to tend to a personal tragedy late last month.
Sources close to Warner Bros. claim that Whedon had actually been contributing to Justice League in some capacity just before Snyder vacated the director’s chair, and the studio has since allayed fears that Whedon’s appointment will dramatically alter the tone and style of the movie. Justice League is essentially complete – all that’s left now is for the director to shepherd this most ambitious DC tentpole over the finish line.
And it seems the finished product will include a WWI flashback after all. If you’ve seen Wonder Woman, you’ll know that the DC origin story is framed as a Diana Prince retrospective, one in which Gal Gadot’s heroine reminiscences over her days spent fighting in The Great War. It seems as though that defining chapter in Diana’s history will be brought to the fore once more, as those Justice League set snaps taken by Batman Notes unveil a German war plane wrapped in tarpaulin.
Justice League opens November 17th, and there’s a particular weight of expectation resting on the film’s burly shoulder now that Wonder Woman has cemented its place as one of 2017’s bona fide success stories. Will it be able to live up to all the hype? Time will tell.
