Guardians of the Galaxy Vol .3 might be the MCU’s last hope at a timely rescue, but the threequel’s stars have demonstrated a great sense of premonition by abandoning this sinking ship when there’s still time. To that end, another one from the Guardians ensemble is saying goodbye to the cinematic universe with this upcoming outing, making fans wonder if they’ll ever see Star-Lord’s gang of misfits on the big screens again.
In other news relating to the Marvel world, Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo has come under fire for claiming AI will take over the cinematic industry completely, though he may not be far off the mark. That’s not all from the superhero sphere, however, as The Boys has just announced that it’s taking some of its most brutal episodes to the big screens, where fans will be able to enjoy all the garish violence in the most immersive way imaginable.
Across the pond, the Star Wars fandom is stirring again to defend a movie that was once globally hated, while Mark Hamill takes the time to celebrate the late Carrie Fisher getting her own Walk of Fame star.
Check out all of this and more in today’s roundup of sci-fi news.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker being hailed as a cinematic achievement might baffle even its director J.J. Abrams
Star Wars fans are so fluid in their beliefs that you’ll never be able to guess what stance they’re going to take next. A few years ago, The Rise of Skywalker was lambasted in the harshest terms as perhaps the worst installment in the sequel trilogy — and that takes some doing, as you’re well aware — but now, some fans are slowly warming up to it, to an extent that the ninth and final film in the Skywalker Saga is being hailed as a “cinematic achievement.”
Frankly, it’s undeniable how great the movie looks from a technical perspective. But the devil’s in the details as they say, and no Star Wars stan will find it particularly difficult to break apart The Rise of Skywalker and its incoherent narrative if it comes down to it.
A very unlikely Avengers star is set to make a comeback to the MCU in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
When it comes to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, most people are looking forward to seeing if James Gunn will be able to redeem the MCU, which has been on a steep nosedive ever since Phase 4. Not only are newer films being panned from a critical viewpoint, but the franchise as a whole is also losing its chokehold on the global box office.
Still, while we hold our breaths in anticipation of whether Guardians 3 soars higher than the first two installments or plunges into an ever-largening abyss of cinematic irrelevance, we can’t forget that this is an MCU movie, so there’s bound to be a ton of juicy cameos and exciting references. James Gunn has just unveiled one of these surprise elements, and it comes in the form of a very obscure Avengers star.
The Boys is bringing its third season to the big screens, and fans are already terrified to witness all the violence in impeccable detail
There’s a reason why R-rated shows like The Boys would never make it into theaters, but fans of Prime Video’s satirical superhero series might be in for quite the wild ride when the third season makes its way to the big screens in a few days. The streaming company is planning a two-day showcase for The Boys season three in Amazon-owned Culver Theater in California, and if you’re one of the lucky ones to find yourself on the registry list, you’ll get to meet the cast and crew for a Q&A on the first day.
Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo is getting annihilated on social media for his strange take on the future of cinema
With general-purpose AI tentatively extending its virtual hands toward artistic mediums and imitating great works of art, whether in prose or illustration, a lot of people are rightly asking if the future of the entertainment industry will be undermined, and in many cases, deluged with a stream of AI-generated content that will appear seamless next to its human counterpart. Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo seems to think AI will take over cinema in a few years and deliver tailor-made content for every individual.
From a practical standpoint, that isn’t far from where the technology is headed at the moment, but a lot of people on social media don’t seem to appreciate this future nor care for all the possibilities it has to offer. In fact, for a moment there, they almost convinced us they care about artistic interpretation, rather than popcorn movies that just pass the time.
Carrie Fisher is getting her own Walk of Fame star on Hollywood Blvd. at the perfect time
Carrie Fisher is finally getting her own Walk of Fame star, and Hollywood has chosen the perfect day, May 4 — also known as Star Wars Day — to celebrate it. In all honesty, everyone was a bit surprised to learn that Fisher didn’t already have one, but at the same time, her commemoration is going to make every Star Wars fan an emotional wreck for the whole week. Even Mark Hamill has expressed his dismay at this, writing on Twitter that the occasion was “long overdue.”
Another Guardians of the Galaxy lead is departing the MCU after Vol. 3
Everyone can understand James Gunn leaving the MCU because of his new role as the DCU boss, but the rest of the cast members leaving the cinematic universe one at a time is setting a terrible precedent. After Dave Bautista, it’s now Zoe Saldaña’s turn to bid her MCU fans goodbye, saying that the time has come for her character to step down and “for the next generation to come forward.”
Saldaña expanded on this by adding: “I mean, I signed up for one, and I got 10 years. Lucky me, man. I have no complaints. And I’m moving on with so much grace and gratitude in my heart.” And so the original MCU ensemble continues to shrink.
