Renown X-Men character Kitty Pryde (AKA Shadowcat) has been earmarked for her own spinoff at Fox.
Collider has the scoop, revealing that Tim Miller (Deadpool) is developing a potential solo movie for the all-powerful mutant. Exciting though that may be, the outlet goes on to stress that, due to the historic Disney-Fox merger, Miller’s project may never take that definitive step into production.
Couple this with the director’s stacked schedule (read: The Terminator and…Sonic the Hedgehog) and it’s important to keep our expectations in check at this early, early stage. A Kitty Pryde movie is in development, but if history has taught us anything, it’s that just because a project sparks into life at a major Hollywood studio – 20th Century Fox, in this instance – doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll see the light of day. And let’s face it; the impending Disney buyout will surely complicate matters further.
Even still, let’s assume the stars align and Kitty Pryde gets the spinoff movie that fans have been quietly rooting for, what would that look like? Well, for one, we know that Ellen Page famously portrayed the mutant across both X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past, though her tenure as Shadowcast has ostensibly run its course.
Chances are Fox will cast a relative unknown as it begins to make plans for an X-Men franchise sans Hugh Jackman. Also of note, Kitty Pryde may well become the studio’s first female-led spinoff since Elektra. For the uninitiated, Shadowcat is known for her ability to “phase,” essentially allowing her to pass through solid objects and disrupt electromagnetic fields – much to the bemusement of Vinnie Jones’ Juggernaut.
All in all, Kitty Pryde is ripe for her own big-screen adaptation – let’s just hope this project comes to pass. Next up for Fox’s X-Men franchise is the launch of Dark Phoenix on November 2nd, which aims to “revolutionize” the superhero genre as we know it.
