Harry Hart (AKA Galahad) is back in business.
Despite taking a bullet to the head at point-blank range in 2014’s The Secret Service, Colin Firth’s sharp-suited agent is poised to return in time for Matthew Vaughn’s blistering sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and Entertainment Weekly has today relayed some new intel (along with a high-res still!) regarding Harry’s somewhat unsurprising return.
After all, 20th Century Fox’s marketing team has been dropping hints for months at this point (“reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated”), so this all-new still of a one-eyed Harry reuniting with Eggsy (Taron Egerton) is more of a welcome teaser than anything else. Not only that, but it seems The Golden Circle will delve a little deeper into the duo’s father-son relationship, as Firth reveals to EW:
I’ll say that something which was never discussed was the idea of an evil twin. That’s a cliché. Plus, the purpose wasn’t to get “Colin Firth” back. It was about finding a way back to that relationship between the characters.
There’s a certain air of Obi-Wan Kenobi about Harry Hart, according to Egerton, who’s confident The Golden Circle will be able to harness their on-screen chemistry to great effect.
Firth, meanwhile, also touched base on the stereotypes underpinning the Kingsman franchise, which is poised to make the trip across the pond to introduce moviegoers to Statesman, a sister organization stuffed with big guns and even bigger personalities.
And because we’d explored the culture clash in the first film, there wasn’t much more fun to be had with that, in terms of the class archetypes. In the first Kingsman, you might remember, Harry is bemoaning archaic values and snobbishness. He’s the sole believer that someone from Eggsy’s background could be just as much of a gentleman. That’s been done. But again, we’re playing with the stereotypes. And just because something’s a stereotype doesn’t mean that you don’t find cases of it. And I think quite often what happens is that when people are quite conscious of their cultural difference they play them up even more. I think youre getting a bit of that game playing here.
Following yesterday’s timely marketing blitz to coincide with the historic solar eclipse in North America, Kingsman: The Golden Circle is all set for its theatrical release on September 22nd. That’s shaping up to be a rather stacked weekend for the domestic box office, too, what with The LEGO Ninjago Movie, Stronger, and tennis drama Battle of the Sexes all booked in for the same date. But will The Golden Circle see off the competition to claim the #1 spot? Time will tell.
