Just when you thought Eggsy had saved the world from total annihilation, and Taron Egerton’s sharp-suited Kingsman could look forward to an early retirement, a new nemesis emerges onto the scene. Her name? Poppy, a ruthless, psychotic entrepreneur who has been described as America’s sweetheart gone wrong. Or “Martha Stewart on crack.”
And so, by the time Kingsman: The Golden Circle begins, Julianna Moore’s unhinged antagonist has brought the top-secret Kingsman organization to its knees, forcing Taron Egerton (Eggsy) and Mark Strong (Merlin) to uproot for America’s heartland – the mountains of Kentucky, to be specific – to buddy up with their U.S. counterpart, Statesman.
Located in a far-flung whiskey distillery, the Statesman HQ is as ostentatious as you’d expect, while the actual agents populating its golden halls are larger than life. From Halle Berry’s Ginger to Channing Tatum’s gun-toting Tequila, The Golden Circle is teeming with zany personalities, which ought to lay the groundwork for some rip-roaring chemistry between Eggsy, Merlin, and their newfound allies.
All of this and more is teased in the new, red band trailer for Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which arrives just as SDCC begins to get underway in San Diego. While the sequel’s cracking first teaser played against a remixed version of Frank Sinatra, this latest sizzle reel uses a sped up version of “My Generation” by The Who and, oddly, it works like a charm. The original Kingsman drew praise for its slick editing and mesmerizing sense of style, and The Golden Circle looks set to take things to a whole new level.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle lights up theaters on September 22nd, and as Fox’s action sequel is expected to have a presence at San Diego Comic-Con this coming weekend – in fact, the studio’s panel takes place later today at 11 am PT – we’ll surely have more details on Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman follow-up sooner rather than later.
