According to The Playlist, Michael Cuesta’s Kill The Messenger, a true-crime drama set for release in 2014, has added more names to its already impressive ensemble cast. Michael Sheen, Barry Pepper, Tim Blake Nelson, and Andy Garcia are all set as to appear in supporting roles, though their specific characters are not yet known.
Kill The Messenger follows the harrowing true story of reporter Gary Webb, who becomes the victim of a brutal smear campaign after attempting to connect the CIA to importing crack cocaine into California and arming Nicaraguan rebels.
The Hurt Locker‘s Jeremy Renner will star as Webb, while other cast members include The Wire‘s Michael K. Williams and Smashed‘s Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Williams will play drug kingpin “Freeway” Rick Ross, while Winstead will appear as Dawn Garcia, Webb’s editor at the San Jose Mercury News.
Director Michael Cuesta, who directed four episodes of Showtime’s Homeland, has experience with the kind of taut political drama that this film will likely feature. With such a talented cast and intriguing story, Kill The Messenger is already shaping up to be a major awards contender in 2014. We’ll definitely be keeping our eye on this one.
