Captain Marvel was a “radio-dubbed nostalgia mixtape.” A transition piece for the MCU in which answers from the final moments of Avengers: Infinity War could be answered before Endgame was unleashed upon us. And sure, it may have been Carol Danvers’ origin story, but another character seems to have taken the spotlight right from under her nose.
And that would be Goose, the cat-appearing Flerken creature who can turn from cute to rabid in seconds. Not only did this cute little fluffy guy steal all of the scenes he was in, but he ended up being an integral piece of the MCU puzzle; along with acting as an uber-effective guard for the tesseract, Goose was responsible for Nick Fury’s eye patch as well.
Though Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has yet to comment on the outrageously popular petition to replace Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson as the heroine, he’d certainly back Goose up if fans started rioting for a dog Flerken.
According to “Hiss-sterical Cat-titude,” a special featurette included with the digital release of Captain Marvel, the film’s co-writer and co-director went into detail about Feige’s cat-based critiques after seeing the first outline of the film.
“When we were working on the first outline for this movie and we shared it with Kevin Feige,” Boden said. “His first note was, ‘we need 200 percent more Goose.'”
So, Boden and Ryan Fleck delivered. The two-hour-long comic book movie is filled with fun, exciting, and memorable Goose moments. And apparently, the whole illusion required four different cats to create.
“Goose is played by a team of four cats who all have their own specialty,” producer Jonathan Schwartz told D23 earlier this year. “There’s Reggie, there’s Archie, there’s Rizzo, and there’s Gonzo. They’re an A-team of cats who can all do one trick — because you can’t teach cats to do that much.”
“I learned all about cats during the course of this movie.” Schwartz added. “One of them is the face cat, a pretty cat—that’s Reggie. One of them is the holding cat, who only can be held. One of them is the nuzzling cat who will walk up to your leg and nuzzle it. And one of them is the cat who will paw you.”
