Despite Avengers: Infinity War featuring a 30-strong team-up that Marvel fans’ dreams are made off, minds are already wandering to the future and the Disney-Fox merger that’s expected to hand the rights to the X-Men and the Fantastic Four back to Marvel Studios. But how much has Kevin Feige really thought about what he’s going to do with all these new toys once he gets his hands on them?
Not a lot, apparently, as the super producer told Uproxx that he’s only idly daydreamed about the possibilities at present, saying:
“The truth? I really haven’t given it anymore thought than I did in my normal daydreaming over the last ten years. Until it’s done and until we are told, ‘Okay, proceed,’ we have enough storylines and characters and expectations to try and meet, or exceed, without thinking about that.”
This isn’t the first time that Feige’s admitted that he and his team at Marvel Studios aren’t actively discussing what to do with the X-Men and the Fantastic Four just yet. Recently, he said much the same thing, though he added during that interview that he has faith that they’ll work out a seamless way to integrate those new properties into the MCU when the time comes as the studio has had a lot of success in expanding the universe so far.
With Feige not even considering this yet, then, it’s up to fans to come up with their own ideas about how the Fantastic Four and the X-Men could be introduced into the MCU. The most common theory is that Avengers 4 will feature some big universe reset that will allow continuity to be rewritten. However, that seems unlikely as, like Feige says, it’s too early for Disney to start playing with Fox’s toybox just yet.
Still, we know that Marvel Studios brass are very keen to get their hands on Wolverine, in particular, and reboot the iconic character as part of the MCU. Even Avengers: Infinity War directors the Russos have said they would’ve loved to have got him in their new movie.
In other words, we imagine that things will start to kick into gear over the next year or so. For now, though, we’ll be sure to keep our ears to the ground and listen out for any new info regarding the incoming arrival of the Fantastic Four and the X-Men.
