The Marvel Cinematic Universe has done an incredible job of introducing a vast selection of superheroes and heroines to moviegoing audiences over the past decade, but even 20 films in there are many more major names still to go. One that springs to mind is Namor, Marvel’s own king of Atlantis, but is there any chance that the Sub-Mariner himself could make an appearance in the future?
That’s the question that was put to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige at a special screening of Black Panther in Los Angeles yesterday. According to Erik Weber, who was in attendance, Feige responded that Namor “COULD make an appearance,” however he’s still working out “IF and when.”
We can take it from Weber’s emphases that the Marvel head honcho wanted to make clear that he’s not saying Namor is a cert for Phase Four or beyond. However, he is in the pool of characters that the producer and his team are considering using to bolster the Avengers’ roster in the near future.
Despite never having made it to live-action, Namor goes all the way back to Marvel’s early days, as he first appeared in 1939, the same year as Captain America, back when the company was called Timely Comics. The thing about Namor is that he’s more of an anti-hero than many Marvel leads. Sometimes he’s portrayed as an outright villain, while other times he’s on the side of the angels.
Now is actually the perfect time to introduce the Sub-Mariner into the fold though, as he has major ties to both the X-Men – he’s part-mutant – and the Fantastic Four. Very soon, Marvel Studios will have the rights to those two lucrative properties back under their roof once Disney’s buyout of 20th Century Fox is complete. Plus, he could provide a bit of healthy competition to DC’s similarly-themed Aquaman.
