Kevin Costner may add yet another sports movie to his resume, as the actor is in final negotiations to star in the upcoming film McFarland for Disney and Mayhem Pictures.
Variety reports that the film is based on a true story about a track coach (Costner) who moves to the poor, predominantly Latino town of McFarland, California and establishes a cross-country dynasty while there.
This all sounds like a fairly significant build-up for a film about a sport that isn’t necessarily in the American mainstream and it certainly doesn’t seem like the Once A Runner-style movie adaptation that track fans would hope for. That being said, I’m sure it will still do very will in its niche as it’s being described as a cross between Remember the Titans and Coach Carter, which sounds fine by me.
Costner has proved to be an excellent fit for any variety of sports movies, having previously starred in successful films like Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, Tin Cup, and For The Love Of The Game, and I think this will be another smart career choice for the always reliable actor.
