John Wick is a myth.
He’s a legend, essentially – the kind of hitman able to strike fear in the world’s most dangerous assassins from half-way across the world. So it’s small wonder why he’s referred to as Baba Yaga (i.e. the Boogeyman) on numerous occasions throughout the John Wick franchise.
But with Chapter 3 – Parabellum beginning to loom over the horizon, one can’t help but wonder: how many more John Wick movies can Lionsgate realistically put out into the world before audiences grow weary of the formula? Assuming they haven’t already, of course…
Nevertheless, when asked straight-up about his ideal ending for the John Wick series, Keanu Reeves waxed lyrical, and imagined a poetic finale for the world’s most dangerous hitman.
Hmm if it was Marvel. I could do both. I can die in battle and then come back. But what would I prefer? I want John to be happy. So, let’s have him walk out in the sunset because he’s not, he’s fighting for his life. So if there’s a battle to be won, it’s his life. So that he can remember the love and for Helen. So, walk off into the sunset.
Who would have thought that a Keanu Reeves-starring revenge thriller would spawn a movie franchise quite so successful, eh? And yet, after years spent away from the action scene, Reeves’ triumphant return in John Wick proved to be just what the doctor ordered. The razor-sharp directing from Chad Stahelski and David Leitch certainly helped, too, and we know it’ll be the former returning for Chapter 3.
Speaking of which, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum shoots for theaters next weekend, by which point we should have a better understanding of this cult action franchise and its immediate future.
