It’s okay if you’ve given up hope on Bill & Ted 3 by this point. After years — decades, even — of empty promises and unfilled potential, we’ve almost thrown in the time-traveling towel ourselves.
As the cast get older, one questions when (and if) it’ll come together. Furthermore, you’ve got to wonder if it’s even worth it at this point. That hasn’t deterred the talent behind the project, though. They’re still waving the Bill & Ted flag tried and true, and that’s especially the case for Keanu Reeves, who recently revealed a few more details about the film.
While promoting another sequel, this weekend’s John Wick: Chapter 2, Reeves discussed the potential project on The Graham Norton Show (via The Wrap), stating that they have a “cool” story in place.
The writers have a story, and we’re trying to make it… It would be Bill and Ted in their ’50s. I mean, that just makes me laugh right there. What happened to these guys? … But there’s a cool story. Basically, they’re supposed to write a song to save the world and they haven’t done that yet. So the pressure of having to save the world — their marriages are falling apart, their kids are kind of mad at them. But then someone comes from the future and tells them if they don’t write the song it’s just not the world, it’s the universe. So they have to save the universe because time is breaking apart. So then elements of the past come in.
It might be a little premature to say that this is an, ahem, “excellent” idea, but it is a promising one. Reeves is clearly excited to make the sequel, based on his response, and while time isn’t necessarily in their favor, they at least seem self-aware of their notable shortcomings. Plus, it’s not as if these movies were super serious about their logic to begin with, right?
John Wick: Chapter 2 is currently playing in theaters and hopefully, Bill & Ted 3 isn’t too far behind. Until we hear more though, head on down to the comments section and let us know if you think the film will ever come to fruition.
