With Kevin Feige revealing just earlier this week that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is on hold, fans could hardly be blamed for feeling a little nervous about the future of the space saga, but if recent comments from Karen Gillan are anything to go by, Disney doesn’t look like they’re ready to let go of this popular property anytime soon.
On The Wrap’s Shoot This Now podcast, the Nebula actress discussed the film’s delay in the wake of James Gunn’s firing, saying that the team at Marvel Studios are still figuring out where to go from here.
“I actually don’t know [what’s going on with Guardians 3], it’s the honest answer,” Gillan said. “I feel like they’re talking about it and trying to figure out what the next best move is. I’m hoping that it all comes together and we get to tell the story. It would be nice to continue it.”
But while Gillan seems almost as in the dark as the rest of us, there is one thing that she sounds pretty confident in predicting.
“I’m sure they will [continue]. I feel like they will. I don’t really think there’s a chance they won’t [continue the Guardians franchise].”
Though we’ve been hearing a fair amount of news lately about Marvel-related projects being suddenly and unexpectedly dropped, it certainly looks like the third Guardians is in little danger of getting the axe, especially when they have a full script penned by Gunn to work with.
All the same, with the movie no longer slated for a 2020 release, you can expect this project to undergo some significant adjustments from what its original helmsman had in mind. For one thing, the film seemed set to play a key role in taking the MCU further into the cosmic side of the things, most likely paving the way for future works like The Eternals. Now that the feature looks like it could arrive as one of the later entries in Marvel’s Phase 4 though, it’ll have to keep up with the context of a cinematic universe that may well have undergone some major changes.
In any case, with production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 previously rumored to begin in February 2021, it’s possible that this flick won’t be coming our way until 2022, but for what it’s worth, it does indeed look like it’s coming.
