Marvel Studios have turned their cinematic universe into a well-oiled machine, but something they’re in the process of working on is diversifying their band of heroes. Black Panther, the first MCU movie to have a non-Caucasian male lead, and Captain Marvel, the MCU’s first female-led production, are on the way in the next couple of years, but something else that would help to redress the balance is a movie featuring a female counterpart to the Avengers, uniting the many women warriors of the MCU.
In fact, the idea was even pitched to Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige by Thor: Ragnarok‘s Tessa Thompson on the set of Avengers: Infinity War. This has seemingly acted as a lightning rod of sorts, with many other actresses from the franchise since coming forward to declare how much they would love to work on such a project.
The latest is Karen Gillan, known to Marvel fans as Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Speaking to IndieWire, Gillan made clear that she thinks Marvel would be stupid to ignore the public fervor for an all-female team-up movie. The actress reminds us how DC’s own Wonder Woman has opened the floodgates for similar girl-power productions, and now’s the right time for the House of Ideas to do the same:
“Now is the time, more than ever. Look at the success of Wonder Woman. It’s clear that we all want that.”
Earlier this month, a photo of many of the MCU’s heroines went viral and reminded us how awesome it would be to see these characters join up to fight evil in their own movie. The actresses included were Scarlet Johansson (Black Widow), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Evangeline Lilly (Wasp), Pom Klementieff (Mantis) and Danai Gurira (Okoye).
Add in other stalwarts like Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) and Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), and you’d have one heck of a line-up. Not to mention the fact that the X-Men could soon join the MCU as well, meaning that a lot more female heroes might be up for grabs, too.
With so much potential, then, let’s hope Marvel listens to Gillan and gets on developing this project sooner rather than later.
