In the final minutes of Avengers: Endgame, it’s implied that the team will be joined on their next adventure by none other than the God of Thunder himself, Thor. And while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is likely still at least a couple more years out from release, Karen Gillan is already excited to find out how Chris Hemsworth’s character fits in with the group.
Speaking to the LA Times, the Nebula actress was asked if she’d like to see Thor become a member of the Guardians, to which she replied:
“Yes. I think that would be hilarious, to see Thor and Star-Lord in some sort of captain rivalry. I think drunk Thor would fit in more, though.”
Indeed, Thor’s final Endgame scene shows the character squabbling with Peter Quill, and it’ll be interesting to see if this rivalry continues in the Guardians’ next standalone outing. That being said, Gillan probably knows a lot more about Vol. 3 than she’s letting on, seeing how she told People Magazine last year that she’s had “a little teeny peek” at James Gunn’s script.
Speaking of Gunn, Gillan also shared a few thoughts on the director’s return to the helm after his controversial dismissal, telling LA Times that she was happy to have him back:
“I was so happy because it truly feels like we’re part of this little family on ‘Guardians.’ And to have your leader ripped away from you is a really weird feeling. I feel that it wouldn’t be the same type of ‘Guardians’ movie without him. So much of it is his personality. The sense of humor, his taste in music, the characters — there’s so much of him in there, so that would have been quite a strange sensation to make it without him. We were just so happy when he came back. It feels like everything’s as it should be now.”
One person who arguably isn’t where they should be is Gamora, who now exists in the MCU as an alternate version of herself from another timeline. But while Nebula’s sister is currently AWOL, it feels safe to assume that we haven’t seen the last of the heroine. For one thing, Star-Lord’s final scene in Endgame suggests that he’s still pining for Zoe Saldana’s character, and better yet, even Gunn hinted back in 2017 that he has big plans for Gamora. If so, then we’ll find out just what he has in mind when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters, which is likely to be in 2022 at the latest.
