Believe it or not, it’s entirely possible for interesting bits of Justice League trivia to be revealed by sources other than Zack Snyder these days. As it so happens, some intriguing sketches recently surfaced over at Reddit, which we’ll discuss right now.
In fact, the material we’re here to talk about was originally published in the Justice League: Official Collectors Edition book, accompanying an interview with Ciaran Hinds, the actor who voiced Steppenwolf. As you can see below, the invader from Apokolips could’ve appeared quite differently had Snyder and company settled on either of these discarded designs.
What I find oddly humorous to this day is how Steppenwolf’s appearance in Justice League was remarkably different from what was seen via his cameo in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Granted, his guest shot in that particular flick was removed from the theatrical cut, but it was included in the far superior Ultimate Edition that was released on Blu-ray.
No matter how you slice it, the big bad’s look had to be influenced by more modern comics such as Earth 2. In those, his duds were much more fierce as opposed to, say, what he wore in books from yesteryear, or in animated series predating the time of the New 52.
As I type this, I must admit it’s somewhat hard for me to refer to Steppenwolf as being “the big bad,” even if he possesses incredible power. Maybe it’s the Darkseid fan in me that’ll forever lament the one true Lord of Apokolips not being invited to WB’s party, but that’s a discussion for another day.
