After years of being stuck in development hell, the third sequel to Jurassic Park may just have found a new lease on life. While Steven Spielberg won’t be directing, he and producer Kathleen Kennedy have had an interest in reviving the franchise for some time. Kennedy is determined to get the film into production and she wants the job done well.
With that in mind, she’s hired Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who previously wrote the excellent Rise of the Planet of the Apes which effectively kickstarted a dying franchise back to life. Here’s hoping they can do the same here. There is no word yet on whether they will rework the existing Mark Protosevich script (which reportedly saw the original characters going back to Isla Nublar) or just start from scratch, but we’ll keep you posted when we hear more.
Personally I’d prefer the latter, the idea of characters going back to the island again is a bit silly, especially after they saw so many people close to them meet their end at the hands of gigantic dinosaurs. It would be great if Jaffa and Silver just introduced a whole new set of characters but still set the story in the same world.
Jurassic Park remains one of Spielberg’s crowning blockbuster achievements. It’s a fantastic roller coaster ride of a film that has no pretensions above its station, effectively an upmarket B movie that recalls the days of Jaws: a remarkably simple premise with dynamite execution.
It’s a shame Spielberg isn’t directing this but if they find a great director to go along with the great writers they already have on board, this could be something to look forward to. No word yet on a release date but we’ll bring you more news on Jurassic Park 4 as we get it.
