The Wachowski siblings (Andy and Lana) are hard at work on their next project, Jupiter Ascending. Set to star Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Eddie Redmayne and Sean Ben, the film is currently in post-production but unfortunately, we haven’t really seen anything from it just yet.

We do know the plot, however, which will revolve around Tatum’s character, “a wolf/albino hybrid who falls in with a human woman (Kunis) who attracts the ire of the Queen of the Universe, by virtue of possessing identical genetic material.” Yup, sounds just about right for a Wachowski film, doesn’t it?

In a recent interview with AP, Lana opened up a bit about Jupiter Ascending, calling it a science-fiction opera, among other things:

It’s a science-fiction space opera. It has a lot of things from a lot of genres that we love. It’s got a lot of original action, it’s got a lot of romance. We seem not to be very good at making small things. We keep saying ‘Let’s go make a small movie.’ But then they always end up being enormously complex. We want to somehow always find something that is different or that no one has tried.

Whether you love them for creating The Matrix or hate them for creating The Matrix Revolutions, there’s no denying that the Wachowskis are some of the most interesting filmmakers currently working in Hollywood. Every film they put out is worth seeing for its ambition alone. Personally, I loved Cloud Atlas and I’m extremely curious about Jupiter Ascending, despite how odd and out there it sounds.

Even though they don’t always hit the mark, you have to give them credit for making movies that are just so different from what we usually see pass through theatres. No one is making films like the Wachowskis and I’ll gladly watch anything that they direct.
