Though the Wachowskis’ last venture into sci-fi territory, 2012’s Cloud Atlas, received a less-than-enthuasiastic response at the box office, that disappointment evidently wasn’t enough to stop the pair from embarking on another incredibly ambitious sci-fi project. Jupiter Ascending, due to hit this July, is an admirably risky proposition for Warner Bros., though stars Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis are likely giving execs a little more confidence in the film’s ability to break even on its budget (which various reports have estimated to be between $100 and $200 million).
The second trailer for Jupiter Ascending will touch down later tonight, but to keep us busy in the meantime, Warner Bros. just unveiled two new posters for the film on its official Twitter page. Check them out below:

Those two posters, showcasing Tatum’s genetically mutated alien hunter Caine and Kunis’s human protagonist Jupiter, make a pretty strong case for Jupiter Ascending as the most interesting blockbuster hitting screens this summer. Of course, the Wachowskis’ penchant for stunning imagery is on full display, with alien tech and weaponry present in Tatum’s character poster, but the acting chops of both Tatum and Kunis will likely ground Jupiter Ascending in genuine emotion. The plot sounds crazy enough that fine acting will be a must to prevent the whole affair from toppling over into abject silliness:
Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning toilets and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along – her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.
Cloud Atlas was one of my favorite films of 2012, and considering that the Wachowskis are working with a much larger canvas (the cosmos, as opposed to Earth throughout time) this time around, my hopes are extremely high for Jupiter Ascending. Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, Tuppence Middleton, Doona Bae, James D’Arcy, Richard Pickren and Tim Pigott-Smith all co-star in the film, which releases July 18.
