Looks like Julius Onah’s starry sci-fi film God Particle has been Cloverfield 3 all along.
Citing sources close to Paramount’s 2017 feature, TheWrap reports that the J.J. Abrams-produced project will be “connected to” the overarching Cloverfield universe, much like Dan Trachtenberg’s excellent thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane from earlier in the year. Speculation was rife that Paramount – and presumably Bad Robot – had been fostering God Particle as the next entry in this loosely connected franchise from the off, and though it’s somewhat disappointing to catch wind of the surprise so early on, we understand that both studios are aiming to roll out a new film with each passing year.
[zergpaid]Plus, the fact that God Particle suffered production setbacks early on in development suggests that Abrams and Onah have repackaged the screenplay to slot into the dystopian world of towering creatures and alien-like machines. That’s merely conjecture, though. What we do know for sure is that Cloverfield 3 – or whatever it winds up being titled – features a cast that includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Oyelowo, Daniel Bruhl, Elizabeth Debicki, Zhang Ziyi, John Ortiz, Aksel Hennie and Irish actor Chris O’Dowd.
Here’s the pitch:
“After a physics experiment with a large hadron accelerator causes the Earth to seemingly vanish completely, the terrified crew of an orbiting American space station is left floating in the middle of now-even-more-empty space. When a European spacecraft appears on their radar, the Americans must determine whether it’s their salvation, or a harbinger of doom.”
Forget the Higgs Boson particle, God Particle will tout some connected tissue to the Cloverfield universe when Julius Onah’s feature arrives on February 24, 2017.
