Josh Gad’s social media activity has long made it clear that he’s gunning for the role of Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, and with last night’s cryptic tweet, the Beauty and the Beast actor hinted once more that the Caped Crusader’s classic foe is still on his mind.
The post offered just two words, “Good Knight,” along with a gif of Burgess Meredith’s version of the Penguin from the ‘60s Batman TV series. And while this could well be little more than the latest in a long line of social media posts expressing an interest in the role – or even a mischievous attempt to get the internet talking – a lot of fans can’t help but wonder if this is a tease of big news to come.

Either way, if the recent report is true that shooting for The Batman is due to begin in November, then we’ll hopefully get a few casting confirmations in the coming months. As a matter of fact, we heard just recently that Ben Affleck’s replacement for the role of Bruce Wayne is expected to be announced some time in May or June, with Warner Bros. reportedly looking to cast a star in the 25 to 30 age range.
Though we still have much to learn about Reeves’ upcoming flick, reports indicate that the film will serve as a soft reboot for Batman, taking the action back a few decades in the timeline to focus on the the Dark Knight’s younger days. But while the movie will likely have few connections to the events of Affleck’s two DCEU adventures, Justice League may have inadvertently teased what’s to come in a scene where Alfred recalls an encounter with “exploding wind-up penguins.”
Though the line was likely meant as nothing more than a nod to 1992’s Batman Returns, you have to wonder if The Batman will feel obligated to keep the continuity, but at this rate, we could still be a couple of years from finding out.
