Deadline is bringing us an update on Tales From The Gangster Squad today. It was reported a while back that Warner Bros. had put out offers to both Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling. It seemed like Gosling would join but Penn was a bit iffy since he is also attached to The Last Photograph, with Christian Bale. Turns out scheduling worked out though and both Penn and Gosling will be free and able to star in Tales From The Gangster Squad.
The real news today though is the addition of Josh Brolin, who will join the cast as one of the cops that along with Gosling’s character, is tasked with bringing down Penn’s character, Mickey Cohen. Cohen was a LA mobster and sociopath back in the 1940s. Zombieland helmer Ruben Fleischer will be behind the camera and production will begin this Fall. The film has also received a title change. It will now go by Gangster Squad.
As we’ve mentioned before, Penn is very picky in picking his projects so the script must be pretty damn good for this one. Especially considering director Ruben Fleischer only has one film under his belt. Although, his upcoming 30 Minutes Or Less is supposed to be quite good. Either way, Penn vs. Gosling and Brolin sounds like something that could work out very well. Throw in a couple more strong supporting actors and you could have some Oscar material on your hands with this one.
