In accordance with earlier reports, filming on 20th Century Fox and Josh Boone’s New Mutants spinoff has entered the home stretch, and an updated logo has arrived to prove it.
Posted to Boone’s personal Instagram feed (with a tip of the hat to CBM), the logo below is drenched in blood. If nothing else, it proves Josh Boone wasn’t kidding around when he vowed to deliver a “full-blown” horror movie with New Mutants, and we’ve learned that the final product will be inspired by the horror trappings of Stephen King (It) and John Hughes.
Chronicling the story of gifted youngsters trapped within a super-secret research facility, New Mutants has endured a long, meandering journey to the big screen, but much like Deadpool 2 before it, principal photography is almost complete. As Boone revealed via Instagram, Fox’s 2018 spinoff has begun its last week of shooting in Canada, so don’t be holding out for any more set photos; instead, we can now begin to look forward to catching our first glimpse of footage.
Casting-wise, the Powers That Be have tapped Anya Taylor-Joy (Split) as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, with Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) attached to the part of Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane. Other mutants involved in Boone’s spinoff include Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Samuel Guthrie/Cannonball and Henry Zaga as Bobby da Costa/Sunspot. Meanwhile, Rosario Dawson (The Defenders) has since bowed out of the project, with Queen of the South actress Alice Braga stepping in to fill the void as Dr. Cecilia Reyes.
It’s one of three high-profile mutant tentpoles pegged for release in 2018 – the other two being Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix – and New Mutants will hope to get the ball rolling in style on April 13th.
