Spider-Man: Homecoming continues to be the talk of the town following yesterday’s barnstorming trailer reveal, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Four months out from the release of Sony and Marvel’s rebooted solo movie and fans have been busy pouring over each and every frame of Homecoming‘s second trailer, uncovering a smattering of story clues and Easter eggs as they go. One thing’s for sure: although Jon Watts’ revival shares DNA with the previous series – most notably Peter Parker – the Tom Holland-led reimagining is a far cry from the Spidey movies of old. Indeed, Holland himself is a strong proponent of Homecoming‘s unique qualities, after the young Brit told Deadline that this particular version of Spider-Man is unlike anything we’ve seen before on the big screen. And it’s not just because Jon Watts’ reboot follows Peter Parker at a younger age.
It is a version of Spider-Man we have not seen before and I think the trailer really portrays that. It might take audiences just a half beat to adjust to the new take but I think once they do they will fall in love with it.
Jon Watts echoed that sentiment in a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter. When asked specifically about the tone of Spider-Man: Homecoming, the writer-director teased the film’s “unique, surprising” nature, which ought to come in handy in distinguishing it from not only the previous Spidey movies, but also the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
I think it has a unique, surprising tone that’s different from the others, and different from the other movies in this universe. I’m pretty proud of the tone we struck. It’s fun. It’s able to go from a very small story, and really emotional small stakes and just get bigger and bigger until it’s on a massive scale without ever losing sight of the story we were trying to tell.
As for that spark between Tony Stark and Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May? It’ll largely remain rooted in Captain America: Civil War, after Tom Holland shut down the possibility while chatting to Yahoo! Guess that means Parker’s mentor-like figure won’t be inducted into the family anytime soon.
“No. No, no, no, no. I thought after Civil War that maybe that could happen, but not anymore.”
Spider-Man: Homecoming is due to hit theaters on July 7th and will, of course, include a post-credits stinger.
