Spider-Man: Homecoming is yet to hit theaters and already, fans are beginning to formulate ideas for the inevitable sequel – such is the breathless nature of the MCU, eh?
As things stand, Homecoming 2 is expected to swing into theatres in time for July 5th, 2019, at which point Marvel will seemingly be ready to unveil the “next incarnation” of its grand cinematic universe. Behind the scenes, we already know that Tom Holland is contracted for three solo movies as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, while it appears as though director Jon Watts has only signed on for Homecoming‘s sequel – for now, at least.
That could all change depending on how successful Spider-Man: Homecoming proves to be – estimates predict an opening weekend in the region of $100 million in North America – but as Watts himself told Collider at the ongoing Homecoming press tour, he’s only committed to the 2019 follow-up for the time being.
I don’t like talking about anything until the movie comes out… [But] yeah I think I’m signed for two movies.
As for what we can expect from the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequels, last week we learned that Marvel plans to replace Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man with another hero from the vault – another Avenger, perhaps? That revelation led to heated debate online, as fans began to dream up weird and wonderful theories concerning Spidey’s new partner. Doctor Strange and Captain America have all been mentioned in passing, but if it was up to Tom Holland, he’d carve out room for Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang (AKA Ant-Man).
Per Screen Rant:
TH: “I don’t know that Iron Man’s not going to be in the sequel. Who told you that, I didn’t hear that.”
SR: “That was the report.”
TH: “Yeah, y’know, press is press. But yeah, Ant-Man would be my favorite. I want to have like a bug bros session. I think it’d be really cool.”
The as-yet-untitled sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently earmarked for a release on July 5th, 2019. It’ll be the first film to emerge from the ashes of Avengers 4 (May 3rd, 2019), at which point we’ll surely have a better idea of what to expect from Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
