Sony’s unceremonious split with Marvel has left fans with a lot of unanswered questions. Where will the Spider-Man franchise go from here? How will the Avengers will explain the web-head’s abrupt absence? And perhaps most pressing of all, what will happen to the romance budding between Happy and Aunt May?
Now that Peter Parker is out of the MCU, so too is his family. This means that his Aunt May can no longer entertain an onscreen relationship with Harold “Happy” Hogan. The adorable flirtation began picking up speed in Spider-Man: Far From Home and had plenty of moviegoers excited for what would happen between the two of them next. Unfortunately, their courtship is dead in the water unless the two studios reconcile.
Jon Favreau, the actor who portrays Happy, is trying to maintain a positive outlook on the situation and thinks there’s still a chance that a deal can be reached that allows the developing love affair to continue.
“You never know what’s going to happen. I’m holding out hope and being optimistic that this isn’t the final chapter of the story between those characters.”
He isn’t the only one clinging to this desire, either. Furious Marvel fans are trying everything they can to bring Spider-Man back to the MCU. Petitions, hashtags, boycotts and more have all been implemented to try to convince the two sides to hash out a deal.
Of course, who’s to blame for this debacle is still very much up for debate. Sony is definitely suffering the most from the publicity nightmare, but many, including Stan Lee’s own daughter, believe that Disney’s greed is behind the fallout. Kevin Smith and plenty of other fans disagree wholeheartedly, though.
Regardless of whose fault this is, everyone can agree that they want to see Spider-Man return to the MCU. Todd McFarlane has stated that he doesn’t think that’ll ever happen, but Favreau and the rest of the optimists are refusing to give up faith. Hopefully, Sony and Marvel will continue negotiating and eventually come to a conclusion that returns everything back to normal. If not, then Happy and Aunt May’s relationship looks like it’ll be over before it ever really had the chance to start.
