John Wick arrives in theatres this weekend with much anticipation. The buzzy new action flick had its premiere at Fantastic Fest last month and reviews coming out of there were mostly positive, with many critics noting that it was a very satisfying and exciting thrill ride that featured Keanu Reeves doing some of the best work that he’s done in a long time.
Personally, I enjoyed the hell out of it and would love to see a sequel pushed into production. Without spoiling anything, I’ll say that directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski did an excellent job of teasing some very interesting story elements that could easily be fleshed out a bit more. In fact, there’s a whole world in John Wick that’s just waiting to be explored, making a sequel seem like a very tantalizing idea.
On that note, I had the chance to sit down with Chad and David today while the duo was in Toronto promoting their new film, and you can bet that I asked them about the chances of seeing a sequel.
Here’s what they had to say:
“There’s potential for so many instalments. And we did approach it in a graphic novel style. So it’s like you’ve just read your first novel, now pick up the next one. We’d love to go back to this world. We need people to go see it though. If they see it then the powers that be will let us make more.”
So, it’s not official confirmation, but the film was definitely made with sequels in mind, and Dave and Chad seem game to revisit the world of John Wick again. While it likely won’t light the box office on fire, I can see the film easily making a healthy profit. Reviews are fairly good so far, as is word of mouth. Hopefully everything will fall into place for this one because there really are a ton of interesting directions that a sequel could do in and so much is there that is just begging to be explored and fleshed out.
For now, though, we’ll just have to sit tight and see how John Wick performs.
