The Barbie movie is closing in on cinemas, and we still have absolutely no idea what to expect; beyond being a fantasy comedy that follows the story of Barbie leaving Barbieland to find true happiness, the ins and outs of Oppenheimer‘s box office opponent are refreshingly nowhere to be seen. Of course, with director Greta Gerwig having collaborated on the film’s script with her partner Noah Baumbach, it’s safe to say we’re all going to be dazzled.
One of the film’s biggest question marks (figuratively and literally) is John Cena, who’s set to appear in the film as a mermaid; a gig that he credits Barbie leading lady Margot Robbie for, according to a recent interview with IndieWire.
But one Twitter user took a closer look at Cena’s remark, causing eyebrows to be raised in record time.
Cena curiously mentioned that he hadn’t worked with Robbie before, despite the fact that their high-profile team-up in The Suicide Squad – in which Cena portrayed the assassin Peacemaker and Robbie reprised her perennial antihero Harley Quinn – would strongly suggest otherwise.
Obviously, there’s a number of explanations for Cena’s comments; it’s possible that the Barbie casting took place before they filmed The Suicide Squad, and Cena and Robbie barely had any screentime together in The Suicide Squad, let alone any proper back-and-forth. Even then, the scenes they did have together may have been the work of CGI.
With that in mind, we can probably chalk this one up to a either a chuckle-worthy memory lapse or a lack of our own knowledge on behind-the-scenes timelines rather than a glitch in the matrix. We’re sure Robbie isn’t terribly offended, either way.
Barbie is due in theaters on July 21.
