Naturally, and despite the fact that Warner Bros. only greenlit the untitled Joker origin film earlier this week, the DC fandom has already been overcome with hysteria. And with a trio of Academy Award calibre talent on board in the form of producer Martin Scorsese, star Joaquin Phoenix and writer Scott Silver, why wouldn’t they be?
Given that the untitled project presently gestating over at WB is undoubtedly the most promising comic book-based film currently in production at the studio – and yes, that was a dig at the DCEU – the long-disgruntled fanbase, for the first time, mind you, has been presented with a reason for optimism. And that hope is now taking shape through some fan-made efforts, as you’ll see below.
Having already witnessed BossLogic manifest a chilling piece of concept art in which what Joaquin Phoenix may look like as the Joker is envisioned, a fan-made teaser trailer – put together rather ingeniously, I might add – has been published on Aldo Jones’ YouTube channel, which you can watch for yourself over and over again below.
Believed to take place in Gotham City during the 1980s, the news hasn’t been all good for the Todd Phillips-directed feature. A couple of days ago, the untitled origin pic supposedly missed out on adding another Oscar winner, Frances McDormand. According to a film reporter for The Wrap, McDormand – whom you might recognize from her most recent award-winning performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – reportedly “passed on playing Joaquin Phoenix’s mom.”
Compared to a “hard-boiled crime drama” that’s said to be “darker and more experimental in tone and content” than previous DC films, as of right now, the Joker movie has no concrete release date, and specifics on the plot expectedly remain under lock and key. Should that change, though, we’ll be the first to let you know.
