THR is reporting that Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow may be writing and directing X-Force, an X-Men spinoff movie. Based on the popular comic books, the series features some of the same characters as X-Men and there’s a bit of crossover, from what I understand. I’m honestly not at all familiar with the property but a handy read through of the Wikipedia page will definitely help you out if you’re in the same boat as me.
No word yet on exactly which characters Fox has the rights to and it’s still unclear exactly where in the X-Men universe this film would fit in or what it means for the potential Deadpool flick, but it definitely sounds like an interesting project. If I had to guess, it will likely be a follow-up to X-Men: Days of Future Past, but that’s just speculation.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, here’s the basic gist of X-Force:
“The original line-up of the team was made up of several characters from the first Uncanny X-Men spin-off, The New Mutants, teens who had matured into young adults. But also among the line up was Cable, a militant leader from the future who is related to X-Men heroes Cyclops and Jean Grey as well as Deadpool.”
Though he doesn’t have much on his resume just yet, Wadlow seems like he could be a good choice for X-Force. He has some comic book experience under his belt now that he’s directed Kick-Ass 2 and from what we’re hearing, the film is going to be quite good. He’d also be working alongside Mark Millar (who wrote the Kick Ass comics) on X-Force, as Millar is overseeing all of Fox’s comic book films.
Whether this all pans out or not remains to be seen but one thing that’s for sure, and that is that Fox has some interesting things brewing in their comic book movie department and though the genre is becoming a bit over-saturated, I’m still curious to see where it all goes.
