Despite the fact that it didn’t sit well with critics, or the majority of fans, David Ayer’s Suicide Squad still did some very respectable box office business, becoming one of the DCEU’s most profitable films to date and bringing in $745.5 million for Warner Bros. As such, a sequel is now coming together in the form of Suicide Squad 2 and the hunt for a director to get behind the camera is underway. In recent months, we’ve heard a few names tossed around and today, it seems that the search is at its end.
That’s because Deadline reports that The Shallows helmer Jaume Collet-Serra – who’d been rumored for the job in the past – has emerged as the frontrunner. That doesn’t mean he’s signed on the dotted line just yet, but he is the studio’s first choice and if nothing else, this news serves as a pointed reminder that Suicide Squad 2 remains a high priority for Warner Bros.
David Ayer’s villainous offshoot may have bombed with critics, but an international box office haul of $745 million ensured Task Force X has a future on the big screen. Not only that, but there’s also the Gotham City Sirens spinoff gestating at Warner which, incidentally, heralds a reunion between Ayer and Margot Robbie, who is back, back, back as the wicked Harley Quinn.
Suicide Squad 2 is simmering in the nascent stages of development for now, but with Jaume Collet-Serra emerging as the top choice for the director’s chair, we expect things to start coming together pretty quickly. Until we get confirmation on this latest update though, tell us, do you think The Shallows helmer is the right man for the job, or did you want to see someone else direct? Sound off in the usual place!
