Arthur Curry may have made himself a whole bunch of new Super Friends in last year’s Justice League, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be hanging out with his land-based buddies in every movie. Batman, Wonder Woman and the rest of the team do have lives of their own, and besides, the upcoming Aquaman will be the first opportunity for the Atlantean ocean-dweller to have the spotlight all to himself.
Consequently, you shouldn’t expect Aquaman’s fellow league members to have much of a presence in the character’s solo debut, especially if Jason Momoa’s recent statements are anything to go by. While the actor hinted at the possibility of further superhero team-ups in future movies, he also pointed out the financial drawbacks of bringing stars like Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot into the fray.
“I think it would cost a lot of money, probably. I don’t think we got it in the budget. But, I think it would be great. At some point, I’m pretty sure, y’know, if this does well and if that does well…Probably, the same thing that happened with Marvel, you know what I mean?”
Seeing how Justice League wasn’t the most popular of films among fans or critics, it probably wouldn’t be the worst idea for Aquaman to avoid too many connections to the DCEU’s last release. Indeed, Momoa has also suggested that director James Wan plans to take the character in a notably different direction from what we saw in the Zack Snyder movies.
“When we originally signed on to play Aquaman, I knew a great deal of what Zack [Snyder] had built the character like. So, I built a lot of it off of using backstory. Little things like, parents were alive, parent’s weren’t alive? All that kind of stuff, we could shift when I got to James [Wan]. The bare bones of where he came from and what he was about, we’d already established from the very beginning and really what Zack was like, ‘This is what I want to bring to the team.’ So, coming over here it’s just like trying to balance and match that, but also James has a really, really different vision and it’s a very spectacular, different view of what, originally, when I was with Zack.”
We’ll see how Arthur Curry fares without his superhero associates when Aquaman swims into theaters on December 21st, 2018.
