Jason Momoa’s casting as Aquaman caused quite the stir when the former Game of Thrones actor was announced to be playing the King of Atlantis back in 2014. Thankfully, he mostly won over DC fans with his great performance in Justice League and now, everyone’s seemingly on board for his own solo movie this December. As an added bonus, though, it looks like Aquaman will steer Momoa’s interpretation back towards the classic comic book character.
The Aquaman Shrine is reporting that an attendee from a recent Warner Bros. licensing event told them that a costume from Aquaman was unveiled which was a perfect match for the “modern comics version.” This is actually just the latest piece of evidence that suggests this, as an image of an early model for an upcoming action figure dropped online a while back, featuring a traditional Aquaman suit and three-pronged trident (as opposed to Justice League‘s quindent).
This isn’t all that surprising when you think about it, either. Momoa talked a lot about his character in Justice League being an earlier take on the hero fans know from the comics. At this point in his life, Arthur Curry is still running from his Atlantean background and has yet to grasp the responsibility he has to rule over the seas. In this way, Aquaman looks to be an origins story for the hero, as it will see him grow into the King of Atlantis. Apparently, this includes wearing a classic version of his costume.
That said, we’re not totally sure if Momoa’s Arthur will ever swap his gold colour scheme for the traditional orange. The Aquaman Shrine thinks that’s a possibility, but the previously mentioned action figure retains the gold. Plus, we imagine DC will want to keep some distance between the big screen character and the Superfriends cartoon that made him a laughing stock for so many years.
James Wan’s Aquaman swims into theaters on December 21st.
