The DCEU films have a reputation for being hit-and-miss at best, but if all goes well with Aquaman, then Jason Momoa claims to have a pretty good idea of how the sequel could start off.
Though Arthur Curry’s standalone debut is still a couple of months away, the star recently told Syfy Wire that he’s already made some pitches about a follow-up to Warner Bros., and his suggestions seem to have been well received.
“I definitely have an opinion,” Momoa said. “Even when we were shooting Aquaman, I have the opening of Aquaman 2 ready. I went in and pitched it to [producer Peter] Safran, and I pitched it to [Warner Bros. chairman] Toby Emmerich. They loved it. It’s awesome…But yeah, I have plans for Aquaman 2.”
Given how long the character’s been around in comic book form, it’s clear that there are more stories to be told with Arthur and his underwater peers. In fact, in this month’s Total Film, director James Wan mentioned that his new movie sets up a few potential plotlines that could be continued from here.
“There’s definitely stories, even within the world we’ve created, that you can actually see other storylines [spinning off from] as well,” Wan said. “There’s the Aquaman story, but then there’s the stories of the seven different kingdoms as well. I think those would be very fun to explore.”
While Black Manta actor Abdul-Mateen II seems confident that his character will find ways of crossing over with the rest of the DCEU, Wan is likely more content to explore his own corner of this cinematic universe.
The filmmaker has previously gone on record suggesting that the feature will contain no cameos from Arthur’s fellow Justice League alumni, and has implied that he almost views this project as a blank canvas to create his own vision for the character. What’s more, Wan seems very proud of the subaquatic environment he’s created for the film, and even talked Snyder out of introducing Atlantis in last year’s release.
From the sound of things, now that Wan and Momoa have helped build Atlantis, they’re keen to stick around for a little while longer, and we’ll find out if these counted chickens will get a chance to hatch once Aquaman comes out on December 21st.
