Kevin Smith’s Mallrats 2 is proliferating the filmmaker’s social media streams in the best way possible. The writer-director last week confirmed that he had started developing a sequel to his 1995 cult classic and has now begun rounding up his Mallrats alumni.
In the days that have followed, a number of images featuring stars of the flick have cropped up on Smith’s Twitter and Instagram. Whether they are holding up two fingers or referencing a specific – ahem, chocolate-covered pretzel anyone? – scene, the fact of that matter is clear: the gang is getting back together. Jason Lee is now officially back as Brodie, along with Shannen Doherty who played his long-suffering girlfriend, Renee.

Ethan Suplee, who played Willam in ‘rats, is also set to return.

The big group shot that Smith dropped last week was the first to kickstart this drip-feed style of casting news. The image includes Smith, who will presumably be back as Silent Bob, Jason Mewes, as his mouthy buddy Jay, Stan Lee as himself and Michael Rooker, who will reprise his role as Mr. Svenning.
As Suplee was the latest cast member confirmed, his announcement includes the sign-off “Only 5 to go.” Those five are presumably Joey Lauren Adams, Jeremy London, Claire Forlani, Ben Affleck and Renee Humphrey.
Mallrats 2 will begin shooting in May 2016 with a release date expected in 2017. If you can’t wait that long for more of Smith’s unique movie magic, this summer he follows up Tusk with Yoga Hosers, which is due in cinemas on June 1.
